What is WYD?
World Youth Day (WYD) brings together young people from all over the world to meet and share with the Holy Father. This international event is an opportunity for everyone to rediscover the place of Christ’s teachings in their lives, to bear witness to their faith and to enjoy an intense spiritual experience. Much more than a simple gathering, WYD is a true pilgrimage, a journey of inner growth and commitment within a young, lively Church on the move.

WYD is primarily aimed at young people, but is open to all who share this youthful spirit, regardless of age. The event transcends religious, cultural and generational boundaries: participants from a wide variety of backgrounds come together to experience a joyful and fraternal celebration. In this spirit of welcome, every effort is made to ensure that everyone has a personal encounter with the living Christ and leaves with renewed hope, capable of inspiring and transforming both the Church and the world.
For WYD Seoul 2027, an estimated one million people will attend the closing mass!
A little history:
It all began in 1984, when Saint John Paul II invited young people from all over the world to gather in Rome on Palm Sunday, thus opening up a new space for meeting and faith. The following year, building on this momentum, he officially announced the creation of World Youth Day in his apostolic letter Dilecti Amici (“To the Youth of the World”).

The first WYD took place in 1986 in Rome, on Palm Sunday, and was celebrated simultaneously in many dioceses around the world. This event marked the starting point of an international spiritual adventure that continues to this day.
Today, World Youth Days are celebrated annually at diocesan level in the various local Churches. Every three or four years, they take on an international dimension, bringing together young people from all over the world.
In 2020, Pope Francis decided that, from 2021 onwards, the diocesan celebration of WYD would be moved from Palm Sunday to the Solemnity of Christ the King.
When is it exactly?
WYD 2027 will take place in Seoul from August 3 to 8. They will be preceded by five days of “Days in the Dioceses” organized across the country, enabling participants to discover different regions before reaching the capital. In all, the event will last twelve days.

Accommodation during WYD :
Pilgrims will be welcomed in different types of accommodation. Homestay will offer a privileged immersion in Korean culture, although group solutions will also be offered to accommodate all participants.
However, experience of previous editions has shown that homestays cannot accommodate all pilgrims. This is why additional solutions will be provided, notably in schools, gymnasiums and auditoriums made available by parishes.
Why WYD in Korea?
Hosting WYD in Seoul in 2027 marks a milestone in the history of this global event. At the opening Mass in Lisbon, Pope Francis announced this choice, underlining the symbolic transition from Europe to Asia and inviting young people from all over the world to gather in South Korea.
These WYDs are part of a strong pastoral approach: listening to young people, their expectations and their challenges in an ever-changing world. They will offer a privileged space to welcome their words, support them in their trials, soothe their wounds and rekindle their hope.
WYD with the Assumption Family
The brothers and sisters of the Assumption always have this desire to walk with young people in daily pastoral projects, but also in high points like the WYD! The Assumption family delegation to Lisbon in 2023 and to the Youth Jubilee in Rome in 2025 are great proof of this great desire! International, intercultural, dynamic and family-oriented, we carry the Assumption charism with our great love for Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Holy Church.

In 2027, the Assumption family is still inviting young people to share this adventure with them in the same spirit, bearing witness to the fact that the Church calls us to proclaim the kingdom of God in every corner of the earth! Our delegation is always made up of young people from Europe, America, Asia and Africa. What’s also interesting to note is that in South Korea, we have Oblate brothers and sisters who can welcome us back home!
So, are you going with us?
