Testimony of Nicolas, volunteer in Paris

I would like to begin this message with a Bible verse that sums up what I have experienced: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7

When I think of Adveniat, I see not just a physical place, but a true refuge, a welcoming environment where there is no room for discrimination or prejudice. I arrived here at a particular moment in my life, a time when I needed to reconnect with God and to feel welcomed. As a Brazilian immigrant, after 26 years living with my parents, making the decision to radically change my life was not easy. There were uncertainties, fears and many expectations.

Coming to this hostel was a true gift. Here, I found much more than simply a place to stay: I found peace, a sense of belonging and joy. I was fully welcomed and able to be myself, without judgment, without intolerance, only with respect.

The people who live here show, through simple gestures, the true meaning of community. They know how to make everyone feel an integral part of something greater.

And I can say this with conviction: regardless of my religion, my colour, my background or my orientation, I was welcomed with dignity and love. If I had to sum it all up in one word, it would be “Ebenezer”, which means: “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” And that is exactly what I feel: supported, accompanied and deeply grateful for every step of this journey.
