Jean, volunteer in Manila – Philippines

Having arrived in the Philippines in September 2025 for a year of volunteering, I discovered a fascinating country. My mission takes place at the Assumption Language College (ALC), which primarily offers English courses to religious sisters and brothers from Asia and Africa prior to their university studies. Within the Philanthropic Development Office, I search for donors to fund scholarships for congregations with limited resources: a concrete way to serve.

At ALC, I am struck by the joy and kindness of the teachers. They have lunch with the students every day, follow their progress attentively and, during events, take to the stage to put on performances prepared with great enthusiasm. Their passionate commitment moves me; I wish I had had such teachers when I was learning English. The students, determined and confident, are also a source of inspiration.

Living alongside the Augustinians of the Assumption is a grace. I share daily life with brothers from the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burkina Faso, united in the love of Christ. Our exchanges open me up to their cultures and strengthen my faith, even if I am not always as diligent as I would like in attending the offices. Their mission extends beyond ALC: managing the humanitarian association Kaloob as well as the local branch of the Bayard Group, and a pastoral presence in the slums and at the hospital. I hold a particular gratitude for Brothers Ethiel and Peter, as well as Fathers Jojo, JB, Chris and Bernard, not forgetting the lay people committed to the Assumption who, with great generosity, help me discover Philippine culture.

Getting to know Manila requires an adjustment period. One of the most densely populated cities in the world, marked by underdeveloped transport and constant traffic jams, it can be exhausting. Yet its cultural sites and the young, smiling population that brings it to life give it an endearing character. Travelling by motorbike taxi offers me a real sense of freedom. Visits to the slums also confront me with the harsh living conditions and remind me of the privilege I enjoy, as well as the call to serve the poorest.

Beyond the capital, I have discovered Palawan, the province of Bataan, Baguio and the rice terraces of Banaue. Despite natural and economic challenges, the Philippines remains a radiant country. This year is for me a school of humility, faith and gratitude.
